…….. As he cuts his salary and those of high-ranking civil servants

By Scoop Reporter

I HAVE decided to cut my salary and that of high-ranking public officials because improving our people’s socioeconomic conditions is a shared responsibility, President Edgar Lungu has said.

In December 2019, President Lungu directed Secretary to the Cabinet, Simon Kamwendo Miti, to cut his and the salaries of high-ranking public officers in Government between a range of 15 percent and 20 percent.

This was aimed at contributing towards cushioning the impact on citizens arising from increased electricity tariffs and global fuel prices.

A Cabinet decision was yesterday was made to cut President Lungu’s salary and salaries of all high-ranking public officers starting from Permanent Secretaries.

And commenting on the matter, President Lungu says leaders must take collective sacrifices first to improve the lives of the Zambians.

“Improving our people’s socioeconomic conditions is a shared responsibility.  This means that leaders should be ready to make collective sacrifices first, to contribute towards improving the wellbeing of our people, especially the very poor and other vulnerable groups in society.

“Those willing to work with me should equally be willing and ready to make sacrifices in our unwavering mission to improve the living conditions of Zambians – without leaving anyone behind,” President Lungu said.
