WWF CALLS FOR PRESERVATION OF FORESTS

By Scoop Reporter

THE World Wide Fund for Nature Zambia has called for strengthened mechanisms that will address the continued degradation of natural biodiversity saying climate change is real.

WWF Zambia Country Manager Nachilala Nkombo said Friday that the rate at which the country has been losing its forests is alarming and deliberate measures have to be put in place to ensure the country’s forests are secured.

Ms. Nkombo says Zambia has been losing about 250, 000 to 300, 000 hectares of forests every year saying this was alarming. She said the country should invest in systems that would ensure the country preserves forests for posterity purposes.

She says conservation agriculture has proved to be a major mitigation step against climate change.

She said Conservation Agriculture needs to be promoted among small scale farmers as successes can be traced through farmers that have adopted the system.
