MOPANI WARNS ILLEGAL DEVELOPERS ON ITS LAND

By Scoop Reporter

MOPANI Copper Mines (MCM) Plc has warned those buying the illegally demarcated plots on Farm No. 840 on the Nkana Mine Licence Area in Mindola North near Ichimpe Forestry that they risk being prosecuted and losing their money.

A group called Voice of the Vulnerable and another one called Luyando Society is reported to be at the centre of the mischief where they are allegedly demarcating and offering plots to unsuspecting developers on the land belonging to MCM.

The said land was assigned in the Purchase and Sale Agreement of 2000 between Mopani and the Government of the Republic of Zambia.

Company Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga has told The Scoop in a statement that MCM will commence the demolition of all structures illegally built on its land in line with its zero tolerance policy to land encroachment.

Mr. Mulenga says the affected area, which Mopani is currently using for its active tailings dams and mine expansion, extends from Ichimpe Forestry to the Kalulushi-Sabina Road where Illegal plots have been allocated, extending as far as the south-west of Mine Tailings Dam No. 15A up to Mugala community.

“Mopani has since reported the matter to law enforcement agencies and notified all relevant authorities, including the line Government Ministries and the Kitwe City Council of this regrettable development.

“All those buying the illegal plots in the area risk being prosecuted and losing their money as we commence the demolition of all structures illegally built on our land in line with our company’s zero tolerance policy to land encroachment,” Mr. Mulenga said.
