ZIIMA COMMENDS IBA ON SOUTHERN PROVINCE RADIO STATIONS COVID 19 COMPLIANCE

PRESS STATEMENT

Immediate release

27 June 2020

The Zambia Institute of Independent Media Alliance ZIIMA is impressed with the comments by the Independent Broadcasting Authority IBA on the compliance of Southern Province Radio stations in airing out messages on COVID 19.

The Authority under its new board Chairperson Mrs. Mabel Mung’omba has been on the familiarization tour of radio stations in the province, checking on how they are surviving during this COVID-19 pandemic and also emphasizing on the need to adhere to the IBA guidelines.

As ZIIMA, we are happy with the fact that none of the Eighteen radio stations was found wanting from the earlier accusations by Mr. Chanda Kabwe.

This is a confirmation to the entire Nation that the recent remarks by the Disaster Management And Mitigation Unit National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe accusing radio stations of airing messages telling people that there is no coronavirus were falsehoods and unrealistic.

We thank the IBA for the tour and encouragements given to Radio Stations in the province, this is how we ought to work together as frontiers of Information gathering and dissemination together with the regulators.

ZIIMA wishes to remind some Senior Government office bearers that radio is a sensitive industry and they should watch their language no matter how excited they can be.

Leaders should know that IBA has complaints Procedure on their licences, so it is prudent that they follow the procedure if they are aggrieved with a radio station unlike alarming the nation with falsehoods.

We also would take this opportunity to seek clarity and answers from the Zambian police on how far they have gone in studying the matter we took to their attention regarding the remarks by Mr. Chanda Kabwe.

  1. Why are Banks freezing civil servants accounts
Answer : liquidity and high risk on governments ,take for example Standard Chartered bank were I am a shareholder I come to learn that central bank was owing us about K3Billion ?

When I asked of legal action against central bank it was discloured that even if you won the case in courts it is difficult in enforceable so this is the current position in Zambia .

Justice is comprised , delayment in delivery of judgment in this case it’s better to freeze the civil servants accounts , because banks we are not charitable organization as opposed to government that depends on donations to manage even the National budget
