LUNGU NOT COMMITTED TO ENDING VIOLENCE, SAYS CHIFIRE

By Scoop Reporter

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has shown no political will to end political violence which the nation has in the recent past witnessed, human rights defender, Gregory Chifire has said.

In an interview with The Scoop this morning, Mr. Chifire says the recent attacks by ruling Patriotic Front (PF) cadres on radio stations that feature opposition leaders makes very sad reading.

“Truth be told, if the situation is not arrested, come 2021, Zambia risks experiencing the bloodiest elections since independence. The Head of State has all the machinery to bring political violence to an end. Unfortunately, for reasons best known to himself, he is paying a blind eye to this situation that is threatening the peace of the nation.

“The President has a responsibility to protect life and property of every Zambian regardless of political affiliation but what we have seen is that he has unfortunately prioritized the protection of his cadres at the expense of national security. PF cadres have been committing untold crimes with his full protection,” clams Mr. Chifire.

He says Zambians are losing confidence in security institutions such as the police because of the manner they discharge their services.

“The Police has become partisan and selective in its public policing,” he said.
