LUANSHYA Mayor Nathan Chanda has commended the Zambia Correctional Services (ZCS) for playing a leading role in the quest to transform Luanshya from a mining town to the food basket of the Copperbelt through farming.
Mr. Chanda says he is impressed with the manner in which the ZCS in Luanshya is working tirelessly to ensure that maize and other cash crops are grown on a commercial basis at Chitwi Open Air Correctional Facility Farm using ultra-modern irrigation facilities in line with the Government directives aimed at making the country self-reliant in food production.
Speaking during a meeting with the ZCS Copperbelt Regional Commander James Nkholomo yesterday, Mr. Chanda says the drastic increase in agriculture produce is a clear indication that diversification of Luanshya’s economy from copper dependence to agriculture is attainable.
He has called on commercial farmers in Luanshya to emulate the ZCS by investing in the mechanisation of agriculture production if the dream to turn Luanshya into not only food basket of the Copperbelt but the food basket of Zambia, becomes a reality.
And Mr. Nkholomo says the massive material and moral support from Government and local authorities such as Luanshya Municipal Council have played a crucial role in turning correctional facilities into key players in agricultural development in the country.
