GOVERNMENT has unearthed a scam in which a named opposition political party, with support from foreign agents, is recruiting and enticing police officers as well as defence forces to resign and be drilled to destabilise the country.
Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo says the plot is aimed at discrediting Government and that a number of police officers have been approached but that some of them have turned down the offer.
Mr. Kampyongo says Government is alive to the development and has warned that it will not allow any foreign agent to disturb the peace that citizens have enjoyed since independence.
“I wish to bring this to the attention of the general public that Government is fully aware of the scheme of a known opposition political party under the sponsorship of foreign agents who are targeting our police officers to resign and then drill them to act in manner that would discredit the service and the Government.
“The hatched plan is anticipated to include also officers from the defence and other security wings. Furthermore, allow me to commend some police officers who have been professional and have since turned down the offers from these unscrupulous individuals and decide to continue serving mother Zambia.
“Zambia will remain a sovereign state and shall not entertain foreign or local agents to play a role in destabilizing the peace the people of Zambia have enjoyed and endeavored to maintain since independence,” Mr. Kampyongo warned.
