‘MAUREEN MUKIYA KILLING PEOPLE’

By Mastone Monze

CHOMA’S Batoka Ward Councillor has raised fears of losing people’s lives following an increase in the consumption of an illegal beer, commonly known as Maureen Mukiya (Kachasu).

Judge Hambayi is concerned that the spirit mainly brewed in Mazabuka, whose alcohol content is unregulated, is making inroads in other towns of Southern Province.

Hambayi tells Byta FM News that consumers are abusing the beer in his area and other parts of the country even its alcohol content is beyond the recommended percentage.

He reveals that a man in his ward is confirmed to have recently died from abusing Maureen Mukiya also known as Gwara.

Hambayi says the council in Mazabuka needs to move in and stop the production of the beer.

However, civic leaders have been reluctant on banning the brew emphasizing the need to engage locals before the move.

Earlier this year, Mazabuka’s Nachipoma Ward Councillor, Kelvin Muleya called for caution in banning the brewing of Kachasu arguing that the majority of households in Kaleya depend on its income for survival.
