WHILE jobs among Zambians employed by Choppies for now remain safe, their counterparts in surrounding countries face an uncertain future as the company has announced its decision to wind up its operations.
Choppies employees in Zambia can now breathe a sigh of relief as Choppies Enterprise Limited Chief Executive Officer, Ramachandran Ottapathu, has confirmed that the company will remain operational in Zambia.
Mr. Ottapathu says this is because the business in Zambia is self-sustaining and slowly growing, in contrast to the situation in other countries.
He says the enterprise would close supermarkets in South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique because they are not profitable but that Zambia will not be affected as the business is self-sustaining and growing slowly.
“Zambia is self-sustaining and growing slowly and in Zimbabwe we will look at the market and how it goes. Namibia, we need to grow,” he said.
The company is expected to close its supermarkets across several African nations in a bid to focus on its growth in Botswana, where it is listed, according to GNN Africa news outlets.
It will add stores in Botswana this year instead and explore new markets.
