POLICE BRUTALITY OR LAW ENFORCEMENT?

By Bennie Mundando

NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) Copperbelt provincial deputy youth chairperson Frank Chiona was today airlifted like a common criminal by police after inquiring why party president Chishimba Kambwili’s wife Carol, was being roughed up.

This happened this morning as Mr. Kambwili was appearing at the Lusaka Magistrate Court for possible bail application but as Mr. Chiona was trying to intervene, he became the hunted as a battalion of police officers descended on him, with one of them trying to suffocate him.

He continued asking the police officers what wrong he had done but the relentless officers pinned him down before lifting.

A tussle then ensued as some NDC members tried to wrestle him away from police grip but were overpowered by officers, some of which were carrying guns and he was taken to Kabwata police station where he was detained.

EDITOR’S COMMENT: We will remember this peace we are taking for granted as a country but it may be too late because we don’t seem to learn lessons from other countries. These court fanfares are only tarnishing the name of this country which was once regarded a beacon of peace.

We don’t care who was wrong between the NDC and the police but surely, there are better ways of dealing with certain situations. As a media house, we fear for 2021 and only hope for the best.
