MOVEMENT for Democratic Change MDC President Felix Mutati has charged that government’s continued intentions to re-launch the National Airlines is a flamboyant project that will only make Zambia join the queue of loses.
Mr Mutati said despite Covid-19 impacting negatively at global level, the Zambian economy did not have the capacity to run an airline as this was a very expensive enterprise where only two airlines across Africa were currently making profit.
Mr Mutati advised Government to put on hold its desire to have this flamboyant project all because it wants to have a flag carrier yet there is no capacity to run the airline currently.
He said the country currently had bigger problems that were more urgent to be attended to unlike pursuing the re-launch of the national airlines.
“Let’s deal with what is affecting our people at Soweto, what’s affecting the mini bus drivers and what’s affecting the cost of living. Running an airline is a very expensive enterprise. South African Airways which has been there for a long time is folding with its infrastructure.
“In Africa, there are only two airlines making money so we will just be joining the queue of loses, for what purpose, prestige?” Mr Mutati asked.
