CONSUMER Rights Association of Zambia (CRAZ) president Aaron Kamuti has called on the Ministry of Transport to put its house in order and stop entertaining unruly drivers who want to put the law in their hands.
Mr Kamuti says he is disappointed with unruly behaviour exhibited by bus drivers at Intercity terminus, where passengers were derailed on account that their colleague was found wanting
He says it is uncalled for to hold the innocent passengers at ransom at a public terminus adding that the Intercity bus terminus is a public place and therefore those who feel cannot follow the laws of the land should stop instead of punishing passengers.
He has since called on the Government and Ministry of Transport not to entertain unruly behaviour by some drivers by enforcing progressive laws that will improve the sector.
Mr Kamuti says it is sad that of late, the country has been recording accidents because some drivers are not fit to transport passengers, a situation he says is becoming a source of worry.
This he says, calls for Government to purchase their own public transport and compete with the private sectors so that there is fairness that will curtail bad behaviour of the players in the sector who feel they are above the law.
Mr Kamuti has alleged that most of the private transport sector are only interested in making money through cashing at the expense of the passengers’ safety.
He says the law should be clear to deter those who would be found wanting.
The passengers were this morning stranded at Lusaka’s Intercity Terminus as bus drivers switched off their engines protesting the five-year jailing of a PSV driver who bashed a cyclist.
Let justice prevail
