MOPANI SHUTS DOWN AFTER MINE ACCIDENT

Mopani Copper Mines PLC has suspended operations at its South Ore Body (SOB) Shaft in Kitwe to facilitate investigations into the accident which claimed a life yesterday.

Mopani Copper Mines Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga has told The Scoop in statement that the accident happened at 3360 feet level as a team of contractor employees were reportedly loading sludge into a stationary underground rail wagon.

Mr. Mulenga says circumstances under which the accident happened are uncertain at this stage and that the mine is working closely with the Mines Safety Department, Zambia Police Service and other relevant authorities to investigate the cause of this tragic accident.

“Operations at SOB Shaft 3360 Feet Level B Fold area have been suspended to facilitate investigations by relevant Government authorities.

“Mopani Copper Mines PLC Management expresses its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased and will provide them with the necessary support during this difficult time,” Mr. Mulenga said.
