WE’RE STILL A COUNTRY OF THIEVES, SAYS CHANGALA

By Jessica Mwansa

THERE are some civil servants in senior Government positions who are slowly turning the New Dawn Government into a replica of the Patriotic Front (PF) going by what is being portrayed in the governance circles, good governance Activist Brebnar Changala has observed.

Speaking to The Scoop in an exclusive interview yesterday, Mr. Changala says the increased alleged corruption and public theft cases by high-ranking civil servants is becoming a source of worry for the dispensation of good governance.

Mr. Changala says even though others are fired, the scourge is still rampant, an indication that there are a lot of people in positions of power who still believe that their positions are a gateway to enriching themselves.

He says this is why even though President Hakainde Hichilema has openly and consistently condemned cadreism, the vice is slowly showing its ugly face adding that not enough is being done to arrest it.

He says accountability is quickly becoming an illusion under the New Dawn Government despite their promise to uphold it at all times. He says this clearly shows that despite changing Government in 2021, nothing has really changed regarding dispensation of governance.

“When we voted for change in August 2021, we voted for accountability, rule of law, and most importantly, good governance but the recent developments involving the District Commissioners shows that Zambia is still a country of thieves,” Mr Changala said.

He has since reminded the thieving civil servants that they have the responsibility to protect the interests of the nation and all Zambians through dispensation of good governance.

Mr. Changala was reacting to recent developments where some District Commissioners (DCs) were embroiled in the sugilite scandal with the latest being Lumezi DC Jimmy Phiri who was nabbed two days ago for allegedly stealing 278 bags of maize belonging to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) meant for community sales.
